From Science to Media — SJIS Students Discover Future Pathways Through the June Study Tour 2025

Participants: Students from St. Joseph’s International School, Kuching

The June Study Tour 2025, organized by GEA for St. Joseph’s International School (SJIS), offered students an exciting opportunity to explore university life, career pathways, and real-world industries through a series of interactive visits across Malaysia.

First Stop: Yakult Malaysia Headquarters

The tour began on 17 June at Yakult Malaysia Headquarters, where students learned about the functions of the intestines and how probiotics help strengthen digestive and immune systems. The engaging session deepened their understanding of microbiology and healthy living through real-life product education.

Second Stop: Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM)

At HWUM, students stepped into the role of young scientists during the “Chemical Engineering – Water for Life” lab session. They learned how:

1. Chemical engineers use sustainable approaches (like seaweed) for advanced wastewater treatment.

2. Biomass-based solutions can be applied to solve environmental challenges.

3. Natural resources such as seaweed can serve as effective adsorbents for sustainable engineering.

After the experiment, students enjoyed a guided campus tour, exploring HWUM’s modern facilities and international learning environment.

Third Stop: University of Nottingham Malaysia

At University of Nottingham Malaysia, students worked in small teams to create various paper structures using A4 sheets, reflecting their understanding of sustainability and creative problem-solving. The hands-on activity encouraged teamwork and critical thinking in a fun and meaningful way.

Fourth Stop: Sunway University Malaysia

Next, at Sunway University, students entered the computer lab to learn about the applications of AI and mathematics, discovering how technology and analytics shape the future of innovation.

Fifth Stop: Monash University Malaysia

At Monash University, students suited up for lab work to conduct experiments proving that vitamin C acts as an antioxidant and that tea contains antioxidants that help prevent the buildup of free radicals. It was a great opportunity for students to experience real scientific research in action.

Final Stop: MILA University

The tour concluded at MILA University, where students explored the exciting world of Mass Communication. Inside the media studio, they learned about photography, journalism, and video editing, gaining hands-on experience in creative production. To end the day on a sweet note, students enjoyed delicious desserts provided by the university.

Through this journey, students not only gained knowledge from classrooms and labs but also discovered their passions, learned about real-world careers, and experienced university life first-hand.
